Overview:
Part fugitive, part hero, fifteen-year-old Nya is barely staying ahead of the Duke of Baseer’s trackers. Wanted for a crime she didn’t mean to commit, she risks capture to protect every Taker she can find, determined to prevent the Duke from using them in his fiendish experiments. But resolve isn’t enough to protect any of them, and Nya soon realizes that the only way to keep them all out of the Duke’s clutches is to flee Geveg. Unfortunately, the Duke’s best tracker has other ideas.
Nya finds herself trapped in the last place she ever wanted to be, forced to trust the last people she ever thought she could. More is at stake than just the people of Geveg, and the closer she gets to uncovering the Duke’s plan, the more she discovers how critical she is to his victory. To save Geveg, she just might have to save Baseer—if she doesn’t destroy it first.
My Review:
4 Stars
Okay, so I have equal parts love and hate for this book which is why I'm going to break this review into two parts as defined by love/hate.
The Love
I absolutely loved the second half of this book! Nya is back and more kick butt than ever. She is such a strong character who will risk anything for the people she loves. The magic gets way more intense on this book add does the adventure, making it a wild ride. The plot twists are so incredible and keep you on the edge of your seat. I love the writing and the characters in this story and Hardy had found a special place in my nerdy book loving heart forever. The last couple of chapters will have you holding your breath in anticipation. As I finished the last sentence, I knew I would be up late reading the third book that night.
The Hate
Did you notice above how I said I loved the second half of this book? That's because the first half drove me up a wall. It was everything I've come to hate about middle books in a trilogy. All the in depth explanations to answer any questions in the first book and basically prepping you for the third. While this tends to be a necessary evil of a trilogy, it was done with such little finesse that I wanted to pull my hair out. It was like reading a data collection report that just dragged on forever. Honestly, if the second half of the book wasn't as phenomenal as it was, I don't think I would have continued in the series.
All in all, in was a pretty good sequel and I look forward to the next book.
