Overview :
Beneath the streets of New York City live the Avicen, an ancient race of people with feathers for hair and magic running through their veins. Age-old enchantments keep them hidden from humans. All but one. Echo is a runaway pickpocket who survives by selling stolen treasures on the black market, and the Avicen are the only family she's ever known.
Echo is clever and daring, and at times she can be brash, but above all else she's fiercely loyal. So when a centuries-old war crests on the borders of her home, she decides it's time to act.
Legend has it that there is a way to end the conflict once and for all: find the Firebird, a mythical entity believed to possess power the likes of which the world has never seen. It will be no easy task, though if life as a thief has taught Echo anything, it's how to hunt down what she wants . . . and how to take it.
But some jobs aren't as straightforward as they seem. And this one might just set the world on fire.
My Review :
5 Stars
One word : Fantastic. Fan-freaking-tastic!
Yes, yes, yes, with a triple side of yes and can I have some more, yes!!!!!!!!!
If you can't tell, I really really love this book. Perhaps so much that it borders on the slightly disturbing side of new book love.
I seriously could gush about this book for days and it still wouldn't be enough. It was absolutely everything I had anticipated and so much more. Grey is absolutely phenomenal. Hey writing is absolutely flawless and she creates a world that you want to get lost in forever. Without a doubt, she had become one of my new favorite authors.
The detail in describing the races and the magic is exquisite and quite magical itself. The plot is fun and steeped with dark adventure and with out of this world (literally) characters.
I absolutely love Echo. Give me a smartass, tough as nails female lead and you've made my geeky book nerd heart oh so happy. To find a real lead character that I have found no flaws in is very rare indeed and a gift from the literary gods. Caius, is undeniably going onto my bookshelf boyfriends list and I could just melt in all of his yummy bad boy goodness. These characters have real depth and real emotion in them and I enjoyed them all immensely, especially Jasper! Ooh how Jasper would never forgive me if I did not write about him and sing his praises of witty banter and fabulous innuendos.
Seriously, this book is superb and while it ties up nicely at the end, it also leaves the door open for the sequel to kick off with a jump start. I'm ridiculously depressed that I have to wait an entire year for the sequel.
