Overview:
War has come to Carthya. It knocks at every door and window in the land. And when Jaron learns that King Vargan of Avenia has kidnapped Imogen in a plot to bring Carthya to its knees, Jaron knows it is up to him to embark on a daring rescue mission. But everything that can go wrong does.
His friends are flung far and wide across Carthya and its neighboring lands. In a last-ditch effort to stave off what looks to be a devastating loss for the kingdom, Jaron undertakes what may be his last journey to save everything and everyone he loves. But even with his lightning-quick wit, Jaron cannot forestall the terrible danger that descends on him and his country. Along the way, will he lose what matters most? And in the end, who will sit on Carthya's throne?

I cannot even begin to express my sadness at the fact that this series is over. I now wish I could turn back time and read this last installment in 'The Ascendant Trilogy' a heck of a lot slower, just so it could last longer. Alas, this was not the fate of this magnificent conclusion to this series. I absolutely devoured this book and I was absolutely blown away by Nielsen's writing once again. You would think that by now I wouldn't be quite so shocked at how masterful she is with her words and ability to make her stories shine bright against other novels in this genre. It is my opinion that Nielsen is well above her current peers and has cemented my absolute loyalty as a fan. I have already started another book by her called 'Mark of the Thief' and my god, it is amazing so far.
... Okay, so I think I have a major reader crush on Nielsen... Moving on now...
We are taken back to the world of Carthya and as always, it doesn't disappoint. The plot is by far the best yet and I just couldn't even deal with most of the plot twists. I'm pretty sure I was gasping throughout 99% of this book. This is the kind of book I crave. It is packed full of adventure, mystical lands, a battle worth dying for, and fierce characters.
The characters really struggle throughout this book, not only with the outside way and such, but learning who they really are and growing into more mature, strong minded people. It was epic to bear witness to. Don't worry though! Jaron is still an awesomely spunky sarcastic smartass, just one with a bit more refinement.
All in all, this was a fantastic conclusion to the series and a series I will definitely be revisiting.
